As beautiful and majestic as they are to admire and to paint - I can easily resist the urge to bring one home from the many Maine country fairs I attend each fall. However, I do take lots and lots of photos for reference and ideas. This particular portrayal was inspired from an old English breed.

Medomak River, Waldoboro, Maine-circa 1740. Life was not easy for early settlers, mainly of German descent who were promised a land of plenty and finished homes; but once here found rocky soil to farm and unsuitable unfinished shelters instead.
